EyeTV App Reviews

Great!

Scheduling shows to record at home from the iPhone, streaming to an iPad so I can have tv in the garage,,,all perfect.

Mediocre -- but serviceable

This app is okay, but my no means perfect. It has the potential to be a must-have compliment for any EyeTV user -- but frankly, in its current form it falls short in ways that simply baffle the mind. Pros: * EyeTV on the Mac will automatically transcode live TV on the fly from a tuner attached to that Mac, and then stream it to any iOS device running this companion app... which is actually pretty impressive, for the most part. * The ability to tap into all of the EyeTV playlists on your Mac is a plus that isnt even present in the standard EyeTV sharing feature (from Mac to Mac). Cons: * For no obvious reason, the app just randomly pauses recordings during playback... sometimes only for a brief moment, and sometimes until I finally decide to just press the play button again. The issue obviously isnt bandwidth or connectivity, as Im sitting only ten feet from my Airport Time Capsule base station... and yet EyeTV has paused my show four times so far -- and Im only twenty minutes into the show. * The thirty-second skip feature built into the MacOS version of EyeTV is absolutely invaluable, and yet it is conspicuously missing from this iOS app; you can use standard iOS scrubbing, but thats just not quite as optimal for skipping commercials. For that matter, it would make far more sense if the entire "Controller" interface were incorporated into this app; after all, its a bit of an overstatement for it to be named the same as the desktop version, if there isnt at least some vague attempt at feature parity. * The impressive live TV streaming feature ironically reveals another obvious missing feature: why not enable the same capability for existing recordings *without* requiring a full transcode of the entire recording to an iOS optimized format? Instead, youre forced to wait through a lengthy "Prepare for iOS" process to run, which is very obviously the exact same operation as the existing export to iTunes feature -- with the exception that the resulting exported version is simply stored inside of the EyeTV recordings package instead of inside of your iTunes library. In summary: This app promises a lot, but delivers far less than promised. I could really only recommend buying it if the live streaming feature in particular is a "killer app" to you, or if you just genuinely detest using iTunes to share out your recordings to iOS devices for some reason. (Note: I have not even been able to get non-LAN sharing to work yet, so I cant really comment on the quality -- or lack thereof -- of that particular feature.)

Needs some serious work!!!!

This is potentially a good APP and would most likely boost product sales if only it would work. If you try to watch anything live its a crap shoot to get a good picture. About 90% of the time the picture is not smooth and freezes quite a lot. If this is streaming locally then this should not be an issue at all. The APP looks pretty good, but when you look at the guide its not clear which programs are set to record. If you want to watch one of your recorded programs, then a file need to be prepared (rendered to a lower resolution) before it can be watched. This can take quite a while and takes additional disk space. I hope the developers are working to correct this APP. The users here are posting helpful information if the developers can fix the posted problems.

Looks great, works great

I’ve been using different versions of EyeTV for a few years. Thanks for this sharp looking update, even if it doesn’t add a host of new features. It sure is pretty, though.

Works but doesnt...

Please fix this!!! I love EyeTV!!! But... The app works marvelously with the exception of horrible video and audio stutter no matter how great your data connection on WiFi or 4G/LTE. Great connection at home as well. Update: streaming video quality still horrible!!! Since latest .0 update! Same issues. Looks nice, but ratings for an app like this is not for how pretty it is. Make it work!!!

Terrific for remote recordings or “i wonder what’s on now"

My wife and I don’t watch much TV. I really only watch it when it is intentional.. that is, I don’t channel flip. I watch TV for a specific program. As such, this has been a great app to answer the question “I wonder if it’s worth my time to turn on the TV?”. Because it gets the listings over the air, whenever my wife and I are thinking about it, we can just pull this app up and look to see what is on, or set a recording schedule for something we want to see in the future. It’s really really nice for that. I haven’t used it to watch TV much, though it seemed fine with that too.

Pretty but non-functional

Horrible stutter and out of sync audio when trying to watch recorded video over my home wifi network now.

Dont charge for something that doesnt work

Caveat emptor. Horrible audio and video stutter with live TV. I read the reviews but still purchased. My mistake. I may use occasionally to set up and watch recordings, but thats not what I spent the money for. Elgato--If you cant get the live TV working well then drop it from the app, or call it out, or charge less. Very disappointing.

Bad update

Please fix the bugs on your recent update, annoying error on poor bandwidth keep appearing on the screen while my device has full signal bars....Fix it!!!!

Bad lag

I have to report the same as other users. Very poor video playback of live tv. Need to figure this out.

Worthless product

I read the reviews about the earlier version and decided not to purchase. I was hopeful that the newer version fixed the issues raised in the reviews about the earlier version. I was wrong. This product just doesnt work. Despite repeated efforts get it to work, including spending time on the Help site I am giving up. Generally I get a blank screen. When I do get anything, which is a rare occasion, it is choppy and unwatchable. I have only tried it across my home network

Marked Improvement with recent software upgrades!

My experience with the recent Mac and iOS updates: markedly improved video streaming and audio that is always in sync. Although I had uninstalled the previous version due to steaming interruptions despite confirmed 50 megabits/second download speeds and rock solid wi-Fi, I am glad I invested the time and took the risk to try these upgrades. Very happy, so far.

So much potential, but frequently disappoints

The functionality of this app is truly great. The design is perfectly fine. I wish I could delete shows from the app as well but that is not critical. What is critical is smooth playback via standard wifi connections, and that is where I end up frustrated with this app. Whether staying at a hotel or with someone on their home, when I try to play back a show from my library I only get a few mins playback before it starts pausing to buffer frequently and sometimes permanently. Support has not been helpful. Unfortunately its not usable.

Graphic CPU

I have had the elgato tuner for my macintosh computers for a long time. It did a good job of recording video and playing it back on my computer. Formatting time for the recorded video was almost as long as the recorded video itself. I was glad to see this app when it first came out, but joy turned to disappointment in short order. The recordings I had made streamed back from my computer to my iPad quite nicely and played without a hitch. Streaming live tv however was a horrible experience. Frozen, stuttering video and out of sync audio was the result. I blamed my home wifi network. I bought an elgato HD stick to speed the formatting of recorded video. The Elgato Turbo.264 is a hardware video encoder it was suppose to help stream live video to ipad and iphone. the improvement in streaming live tv to my mobile devices was minor at best. I was using my Elgato TV tuner on two different computers 2006 iMac and or early 2009 Mac Mini. neither computer provided very good performance for the Elgato live tv streaming. I purchased a MacBook Air late 2013 in August. The MBA has the Intel 5000 graphics. When I hooked up the elgato tuner and the turbo.254 to the MBA the live tv streaming to my ipad and iPhone was working as intended. The last two software upgrades from elgato have also helped. I really think the strength of the CPU and graphics card of the host computer are the key factors and getting decent streaming from your computer to your iPad.

Unwatchable

Video streaming is not working at all. Previous version was better than this one.

I Want My Money Back

At $5.00 (US), this is a relatively expensive app which makes it *extremely* aggravating that it does not work. The very few times I have been able to get it to function, there was terrible video stuttering until the video eventually stopped streaming. Navigating back within the app produced only a black screen. Most of the time, however, the app clocks while trying to connect, with a message saying the app is unable to find EyeTV on the network (I am accessing my home network over WIFI). I was robbed of $5.00 for an app that does not work and I want my money back!!

Excellent addition to an EyeTV system

EyeTV combined with this app has changed the way we watch TV in our house. Firstly, it brings the EyeTV program guide always to hand, and it is easy to quickly pull out the app, check what’s on and click record, all without touching the Mac running EyeTV. Secondly, our kids regularly use the app to watch recordings or live TV without tying up the big screen connected full-time to the EyeTV Mac. Lastly, I have used this from outside my home network on a number of occasions when I’ve been on the road and it works really well. To other reviewers noting problems, it pays to make sure the Mac you’re running EyeTV on has a fast CPU, since EyeTV has to encode the mobile stream on the fly… if you run into problems, run Activity Monitor on the Mac and check the CPU usage. Finally, to use the remote viewing from outside a home network, you have to make a firewall/router port mapping to the Mac, but this isn’t hard to do. Would definitely recommend this app, and at the current price it’s a bargain.

EyeTV is not ready for Prime Time

Dont waste your money. I have been using EyeTV for a number of year and have always been happy with it. This is not the case the EyeTV for the iPad. It skips a lot an is hard to follow. If you were getting it directly off the air it might be better.

The worst

Thought I would give this a try, and its the worst. Was first hoping that I could watch my NFL recordings, but I must first convert them to H.264. Takes hours. Live TV is a joke. Video stutters and jitters. Impossible to watch - and I am on a local network with incredible wifi. Its great that I can setup recordings, but there is no way to adjust the recording time - I always like to extend games by 30 minutes. Also, no way to search the guide... browse only. Totally NOT worth $5.

so far, I am impressed

After reading the reviews of this app, I wasnt sure how well it would work. I have to say I am very pleased with it. I just started using EyeTV on my iMac this week. Last night, I sat out on my patio and watched live tennis on my iPad Air with almost perfect quality. No stuttering or buffering. Set up the app for remote access from work over wifi and was delighted with the performance. Not always a perfect picture, but overall very good quality. I have a late-2013 iMac with 24gb RAM and an Apple Airport base station. I recommend this app if you have decent hardware to support the video stream.
